Grants for Rural Youth Bloggers

Taming China's Wild, Wired West

This truly inspiring piece looks at how two friends brought technology and hope to the poor, agricultural western region of China. The story follows Kenny Lin and Sayling Wen, and describes what happened when both their hearts were drawn to helping the poor of Yellow Sheep River.

Perhaps most intriguing is how these men connected the youth of these poor agricultural areas with the rest of the world through the internet. Students in both middle and high school apply for grants of roughly $115.  While this pays for their school expenses it's also given on the condition that, at least 10 times a year, the students write, illustrate, and post to the web, some aspect of their lives. In other words, that they blog on life in Yellow Sheep River.

Clearly, this model for creating links between poorer, rural communities and the world could be utilized in other communities worldwide. It's humbling and inspiring to think that due to the dreams of two men, some part of the world is changing for the better.  Thanks to Wen and Lin, the children of Western China are starting to dream big dreams.
