Image-Layering Photography

The ‘Camera Obscura’ picture series by Abelardo Morell beautifully captivates and pays homage to the traditional use of the age old camera obscura technique in photography.

The technique of camera obscura combines a camera and a prism inside an enclosed box. Together, the camera and prism are able to capture and project an image of the surroundings onto a wall or screen. This allows photographers to creatively show their surroundings while simultaneously taking a photo of their subject matter.

Abelardo Morell uses the camera obscura to take long exposure images in darkened rooms across Europe and the US. All of Abelardo Morell’s photos juxtaposes the monochromatic privacy of indoor rooms with the vibrant airiness of the outside surroundings. The ‘Camera Obscura’ series features captivating layered images from Ancient Greek temples over top of a Greek living room, Venetian channels over an artist’s studio to Brooklyn bridge over top of a luxurious bedroom.
