The Re-set: New Wings For Architecture art installation addresses the slew of abandoned buildings lying in waste around the world. Instead of conceptualizing new structures, the Dutch Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale responds to vacant architecture. In place of Objets d’Art, exhibit works or stage events, Petra Blaisse, the textile designer behind the installation, has filled their space with a series of iridescent motorized curtains that divide the expansive galleries into smaller spaces.
Changing every five minutes, the Re-set: New Wings For Architecture installation shows how relatively low-cost and low-impact architectural interventions can bring life back to abandoned spaces. Although the construction industry has a crucial hand in driving the economy, it is important to acknowledge the irresponsibility of such undertakings in the wake of so many unused buildings in the world.
