Suspended Tubular Planters

Al Aire by SelgasCano Demonstrates the Growth of Agricultural Tech

The art installation called Al Aire by SelgasCano, an architectural firm based in Spain, demonstrates the rapid growth agricultural technology is currently experiencing. More than that, it shows the future of such practices, how humans will soon be able to cultivate plant life with little or no access to the earth.

Displayed during this year's Venice Biennale in a side room of SPAINLAB’s pavilion, Al Aire by SelgasCano was created in collaboration with biologist Josep Selga. Comprised of a system of irrigated Air Pots, a long series of tubular planters covered in perforations to expose plant roots to sunlight, it encourages the plants to grow axially instead of vertically. Known as 'air pruning,' this technique grants the growth of more, healthier plants in less space. They are fed hydroponically, which also cuts down on necessary soil.

Agricultural Tech
The growth of Agricultural Tech is rapidly benefiting from innovative solutions such as suspended tubular planters.
Hydroponic Farming
The use of hydroponic farming to feed plants grown in suspended planters is revolutionizing food production.
Air Pruning
Air pruning is a technique that promotes the axial growth of plants and enables the growth of more, healthier plants in less space, leading to increased production opportunities.

Sectors Adopting This

Agriculture
With the use of tools like hydroponic and air pruning, the agriculture industry can increase production and efficiency while reducing the need for natural resources.
Architecture
The Al Aire display is an innovative example of how architectural firms can collaborate with farmers and biologists in designing new structures that integrate agriculture and tech for sustainable food sourcing.
Green Technology
The growth of Agricultural Tech opens avenues for new businesses, such as those specializing in green technology that can provide innovative solutions for sustainable food production.
