These Doug Rickard photos are the product of the photographer's journey across America using Google Street View. Rickard was drawn to this project because he wanted to take a Pan-American road trip, but couldn't find the time. He turned to the Internet, and, upon discovering Google Street View, Rickard spent two years virtually walking the streets of America.
Rickard wanted to explore the "mythology of the broken down American dream," which he felt was embodied by the city of Detroit. Through his project he found that there were many other 'Detroits' across America.
These Doug Rickard photos repurpose technology to show us what has always been right in front of our eyes, which is exactly what good photography is about. Rickard has named his work, 'A New American Picture.'
