The Mushroom Cloud art installation takes this term quite literally. It depicts the formation of a mushroom cloud with actual mushrooms. Although it joins a slew of artworks that re-intrepret famous phrases, landmarks and icons in redundant materials, this installation is not at all kitschy. Instead, it is artistically stunning, the way each fungus is suspended on string, which hangs from the ceiling, as well as the dramatic lighting that emits from the bottom of the sculpture.
Created by British conceptual artist Chris Drury, the Mushroom Cloud installation is site specific and can be made up of 6,000 to 18,000 dried slices of fungi. Covered in a layer of acrylic to prevent rotting, the mushrooms are a metaphorical reference to man-made destruction.
