Daphne Selfe, the oldest working fashion model without Botox, is the cover girl for Oxfam’s recent project, “The Big Bra Hunt”. On the poster at 83, Selfe rocks a Jean-Paul Gaultier replica body suit and strikes a pose with a high pony tail like 1990 Madonna. Everyone on the shoot worked for free, including superstar photographer, Perou.
So what is this all about? The advertisement solicits British women to donate their used bras to developing countries in need of decent underwear. The inspiration for this humanitarian and environmental initiative came from a study that revealed the average UK woman owned nine bras but only wore six of them. Oxfam will either resell the goods to fund work in Senegal or ship them to the organization’s social enterprise, Frip Ethique, which is also in Senegal and staffed by the local women.
With Selfe getting more work than she did in her youth with bookings that include Dolce & Gabbana and working with industry darlings Rankin and Mario Testino, she proves that not everything in fashion is disposable. Appropriately, included in this are the used bras she is promoting the collection of. Whether or not you question Selfe is more like wine than milk, her collaboration with Oxfam is an effective image for the campaign that will be difficult to forget.
