Yang Yongliang's Heavenly City Series Criticizes Global Urbanization

Aside from residing high up in the sky, there is nothing very heavenly about the Heavenly City art series. Instead, it is the artist's interpretation of globalization, urbanization and the impact of consumerism in a modern world. So all-consuming are these modern societal traits that they are reaching up to the skies. Yet more than anything, the Heavenly City series seems to be showing metropolises around the world imploding on themselves.

Stunningly composed by Yang Yongliang through photography and digital manipulations, the Heavenly City series is cleverly made up of barcodes and clothing brand logos in addition to cars and skyscrapers. At its heart, it criticizes a world that doesn't cherish nature like it used to.
