In collaboration with students of the Politecnico di Milano, design studio Ghigos Ideas has given insight into perhaps the most alarming environmental question: what to do with all the non-biodegradable plastic in the world? The studio suggests upcycling!
As part of the STUDI APERTI Arts Festival, an annual event held in the Italian village of Ameno, 1,500 plastic bags were colored, slightly treated and cut to fulfill the needs of a modern home. What used to be an unfinished public building is now a modern home composed almost entirely of re-used garbage bags. Oddly enough, the plastic used by Ghigos Ideas dims the daylight nicely and actually creates a very charming atmosphere about the entire building.
Driven by the Italian saying, "nothing can be created or destroyed, everything can only be transformed," the designers have found a useful way to re-purpose the billions of plastic bags which litter the planet. The only remaining question is, are you okay with plastic drapes?
