NewspaperWood by Mieke Meijer Turns Old News Into New Furniture

Normally, paper is a byproduct of wood, but Mieke Meijer's NewspaperWood upcycles newspapers back into a more woodlike state and shows that the lifespan of paper doesn't end once it's been cut, printed and sold. Now that's a role reversal!

NewspaperWood is made by layering newspapers until they become durable and resemble wood grains and tree rings. The material is then used by design label Vij5 to construct some of the furniture you see here. From a distance, NewspaperWood is nearly indistinguishable from real wood. It's not until you get up close and find yourself reading yesterday's headlines that you truly appreciate NewspaperWood as a design achievement.

Though NewspaperWood is by no means a replacement for wood, it is nevertheless extraordinary to think that the flimsy pages you read every morning can turn into such fine furniture.
