Mexico to Market Organic Product to Britain

— March 6, 2009 — Eco
No more wads of chewing gum stuck to your shoes!

A Mayan cooperative in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula have developed biodegradable chewing gum from the sap called “Chicza” of Sapodilla trees, which grow there.

The trees have been growing in that region since before the Spanish conquest, and ancient Malayans munched on the sap to keep their teeth clean. Japanese and Korean companies have used it, but the market dropped after synthetic gums were invented. Global manufacturers never realized the true value organic Chicza until now.

Beginning this month, British stores will be selling the chewing gum in red fruit, orange and cinnamon flavors. The cooperative plans to expand its offering throughout Europe in the coming months.
