In-Dash Pedestrian Detection

FLIR Demos Heat-Sensing BMW (CES 2009)

The heat-sensing BMW that FLIR showed off at CES 2009 is a fantastic development in pedestrian detection. A FLIR night vision camera is embedded within the BMW's dash, alerting the driver of oncoming pedestrians. In new BMW models, a yellow triangle will appear on the screen as a further warning for drivers.

According to FLIR rep Jay James, the night vision camera can detect a .05-degree difference in temperature, so Autoblog was able to see the FLIR-equipped BMW in action even indoors.

Heat-sensing Pedestrian Detection
Infrared cameras embedded within automobiles can be used for pedestrian detection and accident prevention.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
Improved technologies for ADAS can help reduce accidents and improve road safety for drivers and pedestrians.
Multi-sensor Fusion
Combining thermal imaging with other sensors such as LiDAR and radar can enhance ADAS capabilities for pedestrian detection and other safety features.

Who This Affects Most
