Fluorescent Kilts

Scottish Construction Workers Celebrate St. Andrew's Day

St. Andrew's Day is a time for all Scottish lads to show their patriotism by wearing kilts. Construction workers wanted to participate, so fluorescent kilts replaced safety vests for the guys at Connaught Scottish.

The traditional knee knockers featured the bright reflective strips to help keep the men safe while they refurbed some homes.

"Scots and Scots descendants all over the world celebrate their Scottish roots by wearing the national dress on St. Andrew's Day," said Martin Morrison, a Connaught area director. He also noted that the outfits place "new emphasis on the phrase 'Scots beaming with pride.'"

Implications - Despite the globalization of mainstream culture, local cultural traditions are still being celebrated, albeit in unconventional ways.
