Skin-Crawling Tattoos

Insect Body Art

Once again I struggle to find what connection these people have with insects to what they want permanently inked onto their bodies. Butterflies, yes, but spiders? Why would you want to do that?

Popular designs include butterflies, spiders with or without their webs, and scarabs, an Egyptian beetle that is also known as the dung beetle and strongly associated with the pyramids.

Implications - The common themes in this trend are the desire for the consumer for self-expression in a permanent way, as well as the desire to rekindle and reconnect with nature. This is caused by the urban environment and an alienation with wildlife and the natural world. This could also have impacts on urban planning and architecture, in that the incorporation of nature-like design (perhaps through biomimicry) would be well-received by consumers.

Insect Body Art
The demand for insect tattoos shows a desire for self-expression and a reconnection with nature.
Biomimicry Design
Incorporating nature-like designs into urban planning and architecture could appeal to consumers' desire for nature and self-expression.
Unconventional Tattoo Designs
Tattoo artists could cater to the demand for unconventional tattoo designs, such as spiders and scarabs, for self-expression and individuality.
