Big Bang Breakthroughs

CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

A Big Bang simulator by CERN, called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), cost close to $4 billion, is being heralded as one of the greatest experiments of our time… although it’s evoked doomsday fears in others.

CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) hopes the LHC atom smasher, which is an incredible 17-mile long tunnel that took 14 years to construct, will answer questions about the creation of the universe, and perhaps hint at the future of it.

“This only happens once a generation,” said Katie Yurkewicz, spokeswoman the U.S. contingent at CERN. “People are certainly very excited.”

The Big Bang particle-smashing machine experiment went live this morning, September 10, 2008 at 3:30 a.m.
