Hottest Souvenir in China: The Pee Pee Boy

While everyone is in China cheering for the latest gold-medal winners, the Pee Pee Boys are selling like mad. What, you might wonder, is a “Pee Pee Boy?” It’s a small clay statue of a naked boy, designed to tell you when your morning coffee or tea water is hot enough. You soak this statue in water for a few hours (or overnight,) and when you wake in the morning to boil water for coffee or tea you pull him out. After drying him off, you pour your hot water directly onto his head and if he decides to “pee” you know your water is hot enough.

This souvenir doesn’t exactly embody China, but it does tickle the funny-bones of tourists. More Pee Pee boys are making their way to America because of the Olympics. It has been their moment of fame, if you will. And in case you were ever aspiring to walk the Great Wall, you are certain to meet these little guys there, too. Pick one up for a laugh, just be careful…these little boys can squirt deceivingly far!
