Rafts Made of Junk

Algalita Awareness Sail for Ocean Pollution

Would you sail from California to Hawaii on a raft made of 15,000 discarded plastic water bottles and an old airplane cockpit? Junk, sponsored by Algalita Marine Research Foundation, is doing just that to raise awareness about the danger of plastic in our oceans.

When they reach Hawaii, they plan to distribute EcoUsable's BPA free, reusable, stainless steel bottles to the community to introduce them as an alternative to single-use plastic water bottles.

According to the Container Recycling Institute, an astounding 60 million plastic containers goes into landfills, incinerators, waterways and oceans every day. Algalita has been instrumental in studying the effects of debris in our oceans for over 4 years, has extensive documentation on the dangers of plastic in our oceans, and is proactive in bringing the problem to the public attention.

Getting rid of plastic water bottles - and other plastic waste - is a trend that is just beginning!
