Immature News Headlines

Christian News Uses Gay Play on Words

Tyson Gay won the 100 meter finals at the Olympic trials, but the way it was reported by a Christian website, made it sound like a homosexual won the race. One News Now is a Christian news service run by the American Family Association. They arbitrarily changed "gay" to "homosexual" in the piece, so although his name is Gay, he is not a homosexual like the news service made it sound.

Tyson Gay ran the 100 meters faster than any human ever, but because the wind was blowing in his favor. The record headline will be declared: “wind aided.” He ran the 100 in 9.68 seconds, but without the wind it would have been 9.86 seconds. At least one reporter said the record should not have an asterisk because other athletes take advantage of wind to hit home runs, long drives, slicing serves, etc. Dwight Stones, NBC analyst noted Gay has nice shoulders for a runner.

Semantic Sensitivity
As language continues to evolve, there is an increasing need for semantic sensitivity in reporting to avoid confusing headlines.
Contextual Journalism
There is a growing trend towards contextual journalism that tells the whole story, not just a sensationalized version of it.
Censorship and Free Speech
As publishers make editorial decisions based on cultural and societal norms, there is a need to balance censorship and free speech to avoid misleading the public.
