Personal Generator Suit

Charging Nanofibre Yarn

Dead phone or MP3 player batteries may soon be a thing of the past as there is now a personal generator suit to ensure your gadgets are always charged.

Nature.com reports that "Zhong Lin Wang and his colleagues at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta have made a yarn out of nanofibres that produce charge when they are rubbed against one another. Materials woven from these yarns could be used for self-powering clothes, shoes or biological implants such as pacemakers."

The technology is based on the use of piezoelectric fibers, which produce a voltage when they are stretched, bent, or compressed. It's not quite ready for "prime-time" yet however. So far the largest of the prototype yarns consisted of only a few fibers.

Self-powering Clothes
The use of piezoelectric fibers can be explored in creating wearable tech that can charge itself via rubbing, stretching or compression.
Nanofiber Charging Technology
Further development of the technology can lead to the creation of more efficient and effective nanofiber yarns that can produce significant and consistent charges.
Biological Implant Powering
The piezoelectric fibers can also offer a sustainable and reliable alternative powering for medical implants, such as pacemakers, increasing convenience and reducing the risk of surgery complications.

Where This Applies

Wearable Technology
The invention of self-powering clothes can revolutionize the wearable tech industry by eliminating the need for additional charging accessories and improving portability and convenience.
Renewable Energy
Further development of nanofiber technology can provide a sustainable source of energy and offer alternative solutions to address environmental concerns associated with non-renewable energy sources.
Medical Devices
The use of piezoelectric fibers can create innovative and safe methods of powering medical devices, increasing accessibility to life-saving medical technologies and improving patient care.
