Stylish Jewel Tones

The color palette of precious gems, while never really out of style, is making a big comeback in fabrics, accessories and home interiors. Expect to see fashions in the rich, clear greens of emerald, the deep red wineglass tones of ruby, the striking electric blues of sapphire, and the pure golden light of topaz.

Los Angeles designer Gregory Parkinson's 2008 spring collection, "Is defined by jewel-toned silk tops and dresses ... that he delicately tie-dyes himself," writes Emili Veslind in the Los Angeles Times. A recent magazine photo of Parkinson at work in his downtown studio pictured him surrounded by yards of silks in rich garnet and coral.

The opulent hues of precious gems complement and enhance your own natural complexion.

"Fabrics in rich deep berry and jewel colors may do far more for your coloring than black ever might," explains Fashion Era's Pauline Weston Thomas, adding that jewel tones are, "A richly dark, vibrant palette rather than a pastel palette."

And there's no need to wait for spring.

"Now is the ultimate time to punch up your wardrobe with rich jewel tones," hints Temple University's Sara Getz, "With the windows of shops displaying rich jades."

For designers seeking gem-hued fabrics for creating drapery and other home fashions, a "Colorful alternative is Royal Kente," writes fashion designer Barbara Garnes. "The woven textile is manufactured in Ghana, influenced by the original kente cloth. It comes multi-colored with jewel tones ... [and] is perfect for home fashions because of its weight, and the color variations easily fit into any existing decor."
