Olympic Diving Cameras

Gravity Drop Divecam Technology

Olympic divers have been dazzling viewers with their amazing and graceful skills. These popular spectator events are aided by an innovative diving camera technology which follows the diver all the way down from the platform and underwater in a seamless shoot. The camera is literally dropped utilising just gravity with a one-way pulley to stop it just above the pool bottom.

The camera is located in an aluminium pipe chase on the diving tower close to the divers. A smoky glass side allows the camera to take its pictures as it . The glass turns clear underwater so that no exposure setting adjustment is needed. You can see an interactive graphic picture on the Wall Street Journal site to see how it works. The camera drops through air, not water and the pipe chase is caulked.

Garrett Brown who invented the Steadicam for the movie industry worked out the mechanics of the Divecam, including ensuring that the electric cable didn’t snap and an extra tilt-and-pan control for a cameraman, to make doubly sure the diver stayed in view.
