The Ig Nobel Prize Goes to Diet Coke Spermicide

The winners of my favorite awards, the Ig Nobel Awards, have been released. A researcher who figured out that Diet Coke explodes sperm is a top Ig Nobel winner. Ig Nobel also honored a group of scientists who discovered that people will happily eat stale chips if they crunch loudly.

Other Ig Nobel winners included physicists who found out that anything that can tangle will tangle, and a team of biologists who ascertained that dog fleas jump farther than cat fleas.

The Ig Nobel awards honor goofy research that contains real scientific results. They are meant as a humorous alternative to the deadly serious Nobel Awards. Both offer awards in the categories of chemistry, physics, economics, literature and peace; the Ig Nobel prizes also honor achievements in public health, engineering, biology, and interdisciplinary research. Awarded by the editors of the Annals of Improbable Research, a scientific humor magazine, the prizes are based on actual published research.
