The Type 4A-2 Floating Feathers Features Hand-Painted Maki-E Dial Artwork

— May 9, 2026 — Fashion
The Armoury x Naoya Hida & Co. Type 4A-2 Floating Feathers is a limited-edition mechanical watch featuring a black urushi lacquer dial finished with hand-painted maki-e feather motifs. The dial artwork was created by Kyoto-based lacquer artist Tatsuo Kitamura using gold powder detailing layered across the surface. The watch uses Naoya Hida & Co.’s Type 4A case design with a polished stainless steel construction measuring 37mm wide. Slim serif numerals, blued steel hands, and a small seconds display maintain the brand’s restrained dial layout beneath the lacquer finish.

The watch is powered by a manually wound Caliber 3021LU movement based on the Valjoux 7750 architecture. Only five examples of the Floating Feathers edition were produced. The Armoury commissioned the release as part of its ongoing collaborations with independent watchmakers and Japanese craftspeople.

  2. Micro-luxury Limited Editions — Collectors’ appetite for ultra-limited runs such as five-piece releases creates a space for hyper-rare, high-value offerings that blend scarcity with story.
  3. Artisan-designer Collaborations — Collaborations between independent watchmakers and regional artisans surface novel aesthetic hybrids that can redefine product provenance and cultural cachet.

Industry Implications

  1. Haute Horlogerie — Niche mechanical watchmaking benefits from combining bespoke dial artistry with established movement architectures to command premium valuation in collector markets.
  2. Luxury Retail and Curated Boutiques — Boutiques that commission exclusive runs and emphasize craftsmanship-driven narratives are positioned to attract affluent buyers seeking differentiated luxury experiences.
  3. Artisanal Lacquer and Decorative Arts — Traditional lacquer studios and decorative artists gain new commercial pathways by translating heritage techniques into applied luxury goods beyond conventional art markets.
