Drinking Cough Syrup To Get High - Robotripping, Sizzurp and Purple Drank

Kids are getting creative when it comes to getting high. From drinking off-the-shelf cough syrup to mixing prescription cough suppressants (containing codeine) with soda pop, these kids are playing a dangerous game.

Parents and educators are alarmed by the growing popularity of this trend since an overdose is potentially fatal. However, cough syrup abuse still continues to increase in popularity amongst kids and teens.

Abuse of prescription cough syrup first became popular among drug dealers. ‘Syrup’ has been extolled in many rap songs, especially since the codeine overdose death of a popular DJ who glorified syrup use in his music and remixes.

Robotripping is dangerous, says psychiatrist Daniel Angres... "using it to get high can cause hallucinations, agitation, nausea and vomiting. "It can be tremendously traumatic," Angres says. Overdosing on prescription syrup is potentially fatal, but it's unclear how many people have died drinking such concoctions. Too much codeine, which is produced from morphine, can depress the central nervous system and stop the heart and lungs, Coleman says. "The misconception is that prescription drugs are OK because they are medicine," he says. "But if you're taking 25 times the recommended dosage, it's very dangerous." (chicagotribune)
