Kuang-Yi Ku Searches for Ethical Chinese Medicine Recipes

— January 2, 2019 — Eco
With his forward-thinking synthetic animal organs, Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Kuang-Yi Ku attempts to find a middle ground between “conservationists and for people who practice Chinese medicine.”

Synthetic biology is a product of the tech age that definitely allow humans to become more ethical agents. Kuang-Yi Ku has titled his venture into speculative design as ‘The Tiger Penis Project.’ The name is strategically chosen as it is a part of Chinese medicine that is often ridiculed.

The talented Kuang-Yi Ku worked alongside bio-engineers to determine what animal organs “might be feasible to create using genetic modification, 3D bioprinting, and culture tissue.” Afterward, the emerging designer collaborated with Chinese medicine practitioners to develop the prototype a combination of herbs that work with the man-made animal organs to deliver the desired effect.
