San Francisco Submits Permit to Implement Offshore Wave Power Project

In a guest post for Clean Technica, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom discussed his plan for the city to adopt a wave power program. Mayor Newsom submitted preliminary permit paperwork to the federal government today for the project, which he says would create over 100 jobs and generate between 10 and 100 megawatts of energy.

For San Francisco's wave power project, Mayor Newsom says that the farm would derive its power from waves about eight milles off the coast--a move meant to cause as little disturbance to the natural habitat as possible. "The next step in our project will be to select technologies and undertake environmental studies to ensure minimal impact on marine animals, fishing, shipping and recreational uses," he wrote in the guest post.

Portugal has already implemented an ocean "wave farm." Check out how San Francisco's wave power plant could work in the video of the Portugal project above.
