A Robot Artist Mimics Master Calligraphists to the "T"

Displayed at Asia's largest technology fair, Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC) is a robot artist that can be "taught" to mimic famous calligraphists. According to Seiichiro Katsura, an associate professor of System Design Engineering at Keio University, the robot needs a "living model to imitate" so that it can "apply the same pressure and make the same gestures."

It's said that calligraphy reflects the innermost part of the soul, its principles, perception and current moods. It's also a calming activity, almost Zen-like. The art takes years of practice and is almost never mastered but now, even a robot can do it.

Unfortunately, the art of calligraphy is slowly dying and it seems that it's up to a robot artist to carry on the heavy burden of passing on this beautiful tradition. I wonder what one can see through the robot's 'artistic' strokes. What does it feel?
