Underground Cities
Nevada Desert Oasis is a Safe Haven for Natural Disasters

{SummaryTitle}

The concept of a water-poor world is becoming a reality. Matsys Designs has embarked on a project to combat the problem with its Sietch Nevada development, essentially an underground city inspired by the 1965 novel ‘Dune’.

In the novel, inhabitants of a planet described as an almost complete desert seclude themselves in subterranean oases, which were known as “sietch”. The underground city of the modern Sietch Nevada takes much of its concepts from the novel, incorporating underground water storage banks to conserve and ration the precious resource. Providing irrigation as well as transportation are networks of waterways connected to residential and commercial properties, while food is grown using urban agriculture and aquaculture methods.
