It is absolutely genius what five Clemson University students have done with their concept for Illuminate smartphone packaging, which adds to the existing purpose of printed cardboard wrappings to create something more meaningful than a brand's visual merchandizing. Together, Dan Hutcherson, Calvin Hutto, Brooks Patrick, Isaac Levin and Evan Funderburk have developed a box that harnesses solar energy to charge the handset inside of it.
The unique circular carton encourages user interaction, given the innumerable ways in which the lid can be applied to the base. A closer look in fact reveals that the perimeter of the top is perforated with significant spaces and the bottom is lined with a photovoltaic strip. Illuminate smartphone packaging encourages the consumer to hold onto the container for longer, because it can be used continuously to charge his mobile phone on the go.
