'I Am Become Death, Shatterer of Worlds' Sells for £2 Million

Damien Hirst's 'I Am Become Death, Shatterer of Worlds' truly seems like something that is too unfathomable to be true at first. This is not only because of the fact that it was sold for over $3 million, but that it was also made using thousands of real butterfly wings.

A controversial artist to say the least, Damien Hirst is famous for pieces like his pickled shark and other butterfly paintings, in which he "let them die by landing in wet paint," so as to create his masterpiece. Although its unclear how they died for 'I Am Become Death, Shatterer of Worlds,' I think its safe to assume it wasn't pleasant. The outcome is so stunning, however, that I'm surprised it wasn't sold for more.
