Irrigating Urban Sidewalks

Clean Street Keeps Hidden City Soil Hydrated for Roadside Plants

Instead of surrounding meek metropolitan trees with just tiny squares of exposed soil from which to draw moisture, the Clean Street Concept broadens their beds of enriched earth beyond what the eye can see. This system proposes a new arrangement of footpath bricks and a clever network of pipes beneath them.

Danor Shtruzman's walkway tiles are separated by small gaps that allow rainwater and snow to seep down. Smaller storm sewers collect even more and the subterranean channels carry the liquid throughout the underside of the sidewalk. This setup can feed flowers, plants and trees that might have been embedded to line the city roads. The Clean Street Concept improves the management of rainfall drainage and contributes greatly to the lushness of urban landscaping.
