Violent Holiday Fables

A Krampus Carol Shows Gruesome Possibilities for Naughty Children

The host of the hit television series No Reservations Anthony Bourdain got into the Christmas spirit with this surprisingly grim holiday tale entitled 'A Krampus Carol.' The violent rendition of holiday lore was suppose to air during the No Reservations Holiday Special, but the short created by Zero Point Zero Production was pulled by the Travel Channel once they caught a glimpse of the questionable subject matter.

A Krampus Carol was written by Bourdain, and the tale is heavy with his unrestrained humor and sarcastic commentary. Reading much like a Grim Fairytale, Bourdain conjured up the terrifying character of Krampus who is in cahoots with Saint Nick. Santa hands the reigns over to Krampus to make all the naughty children pay. He beats his victims into submission and steals away with them stuffed in his sack. While the tale is not exactly heartwarming, it is hilarious in its blunt use of violence, which creates an interesting contrast with the nostalgic use of claymation.

Returning to old tradition of using gruesome tales to scare children into behaving, A Krampus Carol is Bourdain through and through.
