Amphibious Robot That Swims

Aqua Can Follow You Home

Designed for autonomous exploration, Aqua is a fully amphibious robot that uses an unusual mode of locomotion. On land, it walks on its flippers, and in the water, it uses them to swim. The robot can be programmed to explore watery environments on its own, or even to follow a diver's flippers and act as a kind of assistant. According to the project's website, the unique swimming motion makes Aqua very maneuverable, allowing it to be used around sensitive coral environments. Because it is amphibious, it can be used in very shallow waters where traditional robotic submersibles cannot venture.

Amphibious Robotics
Amphibious robots that navigate both land and water present opportunities for exploration, surveillance, and monitoring.
Autonomous Exploration
Developments in autonomous exploration technology provide opportunities for unmanned investigations in marine environments.
Underwater Robotics
Innovations in underwater robotics offer opportunities for a variety of industries, including oceanography, environmental monitoring, and defense.

Who This Affects Most

Oceanography
Amphibious robots have the potential to expand research capabilities in oceanography by allowing equipment to move between land and water.
Defense
Autonomous robots that can navigate both the land and water can be used for surveillance and mine detection or clearance operations.
Environmental Monitoring
Underwater robotics can provide opportunities for monitoring and protecting marine environments, including coral reefs and other sensitive ecosystems.
