The very first transatlantic voyage via kite-power by a cargo ship has taken place. Leaving from Hamburg Germany to Guanta, Venezuela. The “SkySail” kite is a massive 160 meters in area which will pull the equally massive 132 meter Multi Purpose Heavy Lift Carrier MS “Beluga SkySails”, across the Atlantic. The SkySail Cuts back on Emissions immensely, creating a greener voyage. The sail assists in the engines ease of pushing the ship as the sail pulls, saving up to 20% of their daily fuel intake. Beluga Skysails expects two more ships to be pulled by 2009, and outfit 1500 ships with the system by 2015.
