Dutch architects Slangen+Koenis Architecten are behind the design for De Geusselt Maastricht, a leisure center in Maastricht.
The monolithic complex is characterized by stacked, ceramic boxes that inform the structure. The ceramic material was chosen in reference to the city's history of ceramic production, dating back to the early nineteenth century. Architect Jetske Bömer explains, "The relief in the facade, together with the different color tones make the large surfaces more subtle, and give the building a timeless[,] elegant and luxury feel, which resembles the city's atmosphere and heritage."
The rest of the complex features a stacked roofline, punctuated by roof terraces, that lends itself to a sculptural aesthetic. At the center of the site sits a large outdoor swimming pool that features a water jet and a grassy sunbathing area.
