Niveau Zéro Atelier Designs the Soft Soil Daybed From Waste Clay

French design studio Niveau Zéro Atelier collects waste clay from construction sites specifically in Paris and then vacuum-sealed it to create the padding of the Soft Soil daybed. It is a chaise lounge that was introduced during the Collectible design fair in Brussels.

The clay is seen through the clear plastic casing, showing off the bolded body resembling the textures of Play-Doh. It is resting on a base of recycled stainless steel and the only tone is provided by the client itself, which is a natural pale green. Richard Healy, creative director of Relay Design Projects and commissioner of the piece, states, "It's such an interesting way to look at upholstery. It's an unexpected material to bring into that conversation. For us, that was most intriguing: how it questions so many status quo in terms of upholstery."
