Ford Lane-Keeping Alert System Keeps You in Center of Lane

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, over 40 percent of Americans say they have fallen asleep at the wheel, which is why something like the Ford Lane Keeping Alert system will benefit today's drivers and others on the road.

When a car is traveling at over 40 mph, the Ford Lane Keeping Alert function will alert the driver as to whether she is staying within lane markings. A camera mounted to the car's rearview mirror monitors the car's position in the lane relative to the lane markings; if the driver drives over the markings, the wheel will vibrate and emit a warning sound to alert him. According to Ford's press release, there is also a Lane Keeping Aid function available that applies torque at the steering wheel to direct the vehicle back into the lane.

However, the Ford Lane Keeping Alert isn't perfect yet. For one thing, the system will only work when the lane markings can be detected by the camera. This means that certain driving conditions -- bad rain fall, snow or even sun glare -- can affect the accuracy of the technology.
