Boston photographer Stefanie Klavens documents the waning tradition of theater in her latest series 'Celluloid Dreams.' The golden age of cinema has come and gone, leaving in its place a new tradition of multiplex chains and 3D film. Klavens is determined to capture these historical Art Deco theaters before they eventually disappear forever.
As a kid, Klavens spent time watching films at the Senator Theater in Baltimore. Years later, she returned to this theater, originally built in 1939, and many others, intent on preserving the grand structures in America's cultural memory. Photographing both the interior and exteriors, Klevns uses a Hasselblad camera and long exposures to ensure the viewer is inundated with detail.
Celluloid Dreams will continue to capture opulent theaters across Chicago, Texas and the Midwest.
