High-Arched Hotels

Foster + Partners' Design for 'The Murray' Has Dramatic Arches

'The Murray', a luxury hotel in Hong Kong that was designed by renowned architecture firm Foster + Partners, might not look particularly exceptional if one only saw it from a few stories up. However, the facade along the ground floor has a design that makes it stand out from other buildings. The hotel has exaggeratedly tall arches that rise from the ground up some 40 feet, making every entrance into the hotel feel like a grand display.

Though the uniform, square facade around the upper stories might not stand out, the design is actually quite clever. The windows set into the sides of the building are angled precisely to let light into the building during the peak of the day while naturally blocking the sunlight in the morning and evening.
