Spiky Plywood Pavilions

'The Bolt' is on Display for Clerkenwell Design Week

London designer Giles Miller created 'The Bolt' for Clerkenwell Design Week. The pavilion stands in St. John's Square, and its lightning bolt-shaped louvers give it a rough, spiky appearance, like a hedgehog bristling its quills or a burr primed to latch onto an animal.

Miller built The Bolt in collaboration with Shinola. It is meant to honor and reference the brand's Detroit factory, and the black painted lightning bolts both resemble the stacks of fresh leather that dot the factory as well as Shinola's own logo and motif. Those louvers serve a third, practical purpose as well: they're each angled precisely, by hand, in order to control the amount of light that makes it into the inside of the pavilion. There are approximately 8,000 bolts in all.
