Miniature Root Chairs

Artist Kai Linke is Practicing Growing Chairs With Plant Roots

Artist and designer Kai Linke is making miniature root chairs. First, he creates chair molds and attaches plants to the back of them. Then he lets the plant grow, and the roots begin to fill in the chair mold. The eventual results are miniature root chairs.

Kai Linke plans on perfecting his technique using the miniature root chairs so that he can eventually create human-size root chairs. One such life-size project has already begun.

Implications - Kai Linke artistic experiments involve fast-growing plant life and using their roots as the basis for a chair. This is really an innovative artistic and design oriented project that has both a functional and aesthetic dimension. I would really like to see more designers get this innovative when it comes to creating designs.
