Remote Lifeguard Towers

Crosson Architects' Design is Located on a New Zealand Beach

Located on a remote New Zealand beach, this life guard tower by Crosson Architects treads the line between futuristic sensibilities and steampunk aesthetics. The structure was designed by local studio Crosson Architects and the New Zealand beach in question is North Piha, which is near Auckland, and is considered one of the "most beautiful but dangerous surf beaches" in the entire country.

The visual presence of the black-sand beach intensifies the character of the remote lifeguard tower. The project was commissioned by the United North Piha Surf Lifesaving Service and it requested a building that was durable and practical. Crosson Architects took cues from the immediate surroundings to develop the aesthetic of the lifeguard tower. At its completion, the structure could, of course, provide superb visibility along the beach and provide shelter for up to four lifeguards.
