Trapezoidal Church Designs

This Modern Church in Cinisi, Italy Has Rooftop Gardens

Modern architecture is rarely a marker of church designs, but this plan from Sinisi, Italy opts for a contemporary approach. This design by Studio Kuadra was selected in the Cinisi Church Competition and stood out because of the design's connection between interior and exterior spaces.

The main portion of the church is clad in local stone, anchored by a large bell tower that emerges from the ground. The church is lit by holes in the stone walls and ceilings arranged in the shape of a cross. Large exposed windows, atypical of churches brings in natural light as well as views of the adjacent garden. The church design includes specially commissioned works of art including paintings of the life of Mary, and a sculpture of the Madonna.
