The Cavity Mechanism Sculptures Use Gravity to Suspend Rocks

Cavity Mechanism is a series of sculptures by artist Dan Grayber. In an interview for Make magazine, Grayber describes the project as a series of "purposeful objects that, basically, solved their own problems." In other words, the sculptures' use gravity and mass to solve the problems that come with their having gravity and mass (i.e. sitting coarsely and ungracefully at the bottom of a bell jar.)

The majority of the Cavity Mechanism sculptures are placed inside of bell jars, which themselves are an essential part of the construction. They then use some sort of weighted object — usually a stone that's either sculpted or rough — that is attached to a complex set of levers and pulleys. By dint of the weight of the stones, the sculptural contraptions exert outward force on the sides of the bell jars, thus keeping themselves suspended.
