Contemporary Rural Residencies

AtelierCarle Presents the BROM Project, Located in Rural Quebec

The BROM project by AtelierCarle represents a thoughtful and culturally grounded approach to residential architecture in rural Quebec.

Situated on a century-old estate in Lac-Brome, the design navigates the delicate balance between preservation and innovation. AtelierCarle chose to retain key elements of the original structure — such as the stone foundations and chimney — while introducing a new building that harmonizes with the landscape. Material choices, including reclaimed wood and locally sourced stone, reinforce durability and environmental responsibility

The project challenges conventional aesthetic norms by prioritizing sensory and cultural experience over mere visual appeal. The architects drew inspiration from philosopher Jacques Rancière’s perspective on the intersection of art and politics. The BROM project splits the residence into three pavilions that evoke the proportions of 19th-century rural architecture.
