UNESCO has Revealed the Design for the Bamiyan Cultural Center

UNESCO has revealed the winning design in its competition to develop a Bamiyan Cultural Center on the landscape of the Bamiyan Valley in Afghanistan. The Bamiyan Cultural Center will be built on a site that previously played host to two seventh-century Buddhas recently destroyed by militants and that has been the subject of a competition by UNESCO put out toward the end of 2014.

Titled 'Descriptive Memory: The Eternal Presence of Absence,' the winning design from a team of Argentinian architects led by Carlos Nahuel Recabarren and will feature a prominent public park that meets the rooftop of a sunken building complex.

The site of the Bamiyan Cultural Center offers stunning views and is an important stop on the ancient Silk Road trading route and will be funded by the Republic of Korea.
