Spanning the city of Copenhagen, the Superkilen by BIG, Topotek1 and Superflex urban spaces include design inspiration from the diverse nature of the city’s population.
A metropolitan span of recreation located in Nørrebro, these public spaces promote a sense of community in a vastly urban and cosmopolitan setting. The three architecture firms collaborated to create a makeshift superpark that spans 750 meters in the northern end of Copenhagen. Split into three different zones, each location epitomizes the best of an international culture.
The mixture of motifs in the design aesthetic, such as picnic benches from Armenia and neon signs from Russia, are meant to create a sense of inclusiveness representative of the diverse population of the city. Martin-Rein Cano of Topotek1 explains: "Rather than perpetuating a perception of Denmark as a mono-ethnic people, the park portrays a true sample of the cultural diversity of contemporary Copenhagen." This inspired approach to communal recreation is exemplary to an all-encompassing design that imitates the city’s harmonized cultural mash-up.
