Trafikverket is Leading a Project to Charge EVs Whilst Driving

The Swedish transport administration Trafikverket is working on a new project that is developing an electric road with the capability to charge vehicles as they drive over it. This way, it allows for a lesser time when waiting around dedicated charging stations.

There are currently a few options that Trafikverket is looking to create -- the first is to string power lines along the overhead and have them transmit energy toward a conductive pickup. This will be under the vehicle and the other option is to implant electromagnetic coils directly into the asphalt in an inductive system. The new electric highway has plans to be ready as soon as 2025 and will be running through the European E20 stretch.
Trend Themes
1. Electric Roadways - Creating more efficient charging stations by implanting electromagnetic coils directly into the asphalt in an inductive system for EVs.
2. Inductive Charging Systems - Developing ways to charge EVs as they drive over the road, rather than relying on charging stations or power lines.
3. Smart Infrastructure - Advancing infrastructure to provide more efficient EV charging solutions and reducing the dependency on traditional charging stations.
Industry Implications
1. Transportation - Opportunity for transportation companies to invest in R&D to incorporate electric roadways that provide efficient charging solutions for EVs.
2. Energy - Enhancement of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to for the development of efficient electric roadway charging solutions.
3. Technology - Incorporating advancements in wireless technology and AI, and installing smart infrastructure, to improve the electric roadway charging system for EVs.
