Cave-Like Exhibition Spaces

H&P Architects Used Repurposed Tiles to Construct the Ngoi Space

H&P Architects designed the Ngoi Space exhibition center to resemble a natural cave-dwelling and tree canopies. The building's entire facade is crated out of tile waste found on the streets in Vietnam. The material wraps the city building in a curtain of terracotta tile.

Vietnam is known for its tilework architecture. Unfortunately, many of the crumbling tiled buildings are demolished along with their materials. Constructed with a concrete frame, the Ngoi Space is wrapped in 2,000 discarded tiles. The architects prove that builders can easily give old materials a new life. The design goal was to produce a distinct terracotta appearance. The tiles used harness light and shadows to challenge conventional architecture's sense of space. Assorted and multilayered chambers found in caves informed the room designs for Ngoi Space.
