Stillness in Motion is a singular sculpture made out of atypically applied materials. While wood is often one staple for sculptors, Cleveland-based artist Olga Ziemska has decided to explore a different way to utilize it. Instead of carving a big hunk of raw lumber, she works with numerous locally reclaimed willow branches that have been cut, stacked and bound with wire cords to form a curvaceous female figure.
Installed at the Centre of Polish Sculpture in Oronsko, Poland, the Stillness in Motion sculpture sports that name for a very good reason. The branches splay out behind the carefully formed figure to create the illusion that she is moving even though she will forever remain stock still. When viewed solely from behind, Still in Motion almost looks like a very large porcupine.
